Wind Tunnel Tests

Our company performed Wind Tunnel tests (mainly in Milan’s University Politecnico – La Bovisa) on many conventional and experimental sailplans

The pictures show:

  1. a conventional IMS sailplan with overlapping jib
  2. an experimental sailplan with double A mast and two jibs
  3. the wind tunnel control room

Tank Tests

Semi-Planing Motor Yacht

Various semi-planing hulls have been tested in different tank facilities.

The pictures here show in Rome tank facility (INSEAN):

  1. one 32m hull at slow Froude number (the model was tested up to 30 kts)
  2. the shape of  the model out of the water

Tank Tests

International 12m Class

For the 1983 America’s Cup Challenge Azzurra, four different hulls were tested in Rome tank facility (INSEAN).

The pictures show:

  1. One of the models in the circulation channel
  2. One of the models in the 400m towing tank
  3. The shape outside of the water of one of the models

Tank Tests

International 12m Class

International 12m class

For the 1987 America’s Cup Challenge Azzurra, three different hulls have been tested in Wagening tank facility (MARIN).

The pictures show:

  • One of the models in the towing tank in heeled conditions
  • The shape outside of the water of one model with butterfly keel with winglets

Tank Tests

Displacement Motor Yacht

Various displacement hulls have been tested in different tank facilities.

The pictures here show in Rome tank facility (INSEAN):

  1. one 40m hull at intermediate Froude number (the model was tested up to 0.45 Fn)
  2. the shape of  the model out of the water

Finite Element Analysis

Stresses plot of a 100′ and a 25′ sailing yacht

Finite Element Analysis (FEM) have been widely used by our company in designing hull structures with different software’s.

The picture shows:

  1. Part of the mesh of a 100’ sailing yacht
  2. Stresses plots of some hull areas (around chainplates)
  3. Keel stresses plot of a 24’ sailing yacht
  4. Deck stresses plot of a 24’ sailing yacht

CFD

Plot of a 100′ Semi-Planing Motor Yacht

Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) software have been widely used as “virtual towing tank”

The pictures show:

  1. Pressure plots of a 40m hull
  2. Trim plots
  3. Sinkage plots
  4. Power prediction plots of a 40m hull
